Feline Herpes Complications
Feline Herpes, Anorexia and dehydration resulting from apathy and appetite loss may become severe enough for assisted feeding and fluid therapy. The cat owner must seek veterinary care immediately if the cat does not respond to home therapy.
The feline herpes virus puts in utero kittens at risk, as well. If the mother contracts Feline Herpes -1 and becomes ill with FVR, her kittens may
- Develop bacterial pneumonia;
- Be sickly at birth; or
- Spontaneously abort.
Cats infected with the feline herpes virus develop a spastic cough and may also develop conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva), keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) or corneal ulcerations if the eyes are affected.
