Scar tissue, glaucoma from an untreated cataract, retinal detachment, post-operative infection and blindness from an inoperable cataract are the primary complications of feline cataracts.
Feline glaucoma occurs when excessive fluid pressure builds up in the part of the eye known as the aqueous humor. The aqueous humor, which nourishes the lens and cornea, constantly flows and drains through the pupil to the anterior chamber and out into the bloodstream via the iridocorneal angle. The presence of an abnormality, such as a cataract, blocks normal fluid flow and raises pressure inside the eye, causing glaucoma. Feline glaucoma treatment depends upon whether the primary goal is to stop pain in a blind eye or save the patient’s vision.
Cats develop either primary or secondary glaucoma. In primary (congenital) glaucoma, decreased outflow from the drainage angle of the eye increases pressure, causing glaucoma. In secondary glaucoma, an outside cause such as lens luxation (dislocation), bleeding, inflammation or tumor increases pressure.
Signs of feline glaucoma the caregiver should watch for include:
- A bloodshot eye;
- A painful eye;
- Excessive watering;
- Sudden blindness;
- Eyelids that remain shut;
- Cloudy or blue look to the eye;
- Enlarged pupil that does not respond normally to light;
- Depression;
- Loss of appetite; and
- An enlarged eye.
Feline glaucoma can develop suddenly or over a period of weeks. A caregiver should always make a point of regularly observing her cat’s eyes for signs of trouble.
