Feline Cataracts – Causes

Veterinarians define feline cataracts as any opacity or spot on the lens that blocks light transmissions to the retina. Cataracts impair vision and may lead to blindness in some cases. Feline cataracts are rare; nevertheless, they do occur, and most often in conjunction with an underlying condition such as an inflammation or a trauma. Under less frequent circumstances, cats will inherit feline cataracts or develop them as a result of nutritional deficiencies or physical abnormalities and birth defects, such as microphthalmia (abnormally small eye) or persistent papillary membrane (a tissue tag either across the iris or running from the iris to the cornea). Feline cataracts may be present at birth and may appear suddenly, or develop slowly, when caused by disease or trauma. The Birman, Himalayan, Persian and British Shorthair breeds are predisposed to feline cataract development.

Veterinarians classify feline cataracts as falling under one of the following developmental categories:

  • Incipient — very small;
  • Immature — affecting more of the lens than an incipient cataract, but not all of it;
  • Mature — affecting the entire lens; or
  • Hypermature — in which the lens begin to shrink and reabsorb.

Feline cataracts are not to be confused with nuclear, or lenticular, sclerosis, which appears as a bluish haze on the lens in senior cats. Nuclear sclerosis does not block vision, nor does it require any treatment. It occurs as the result of normal aging of the eye as lenses lose water and fibers on the lens surface push toward the lens center.

Anterior uveitis, an inflammation of the iris and cilliary body (the tissues around and behind the pupil) caused by an immune system deficiency, is one of the major causes of feline cataracts. Uveitis occurs in either one or both eyes in conjunction with a systemic illness, such as feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis, feline herpes virus or toxoplasmosis; it is painful and serious enough that it can lead to blindness.

Trauma from a scratch or injury to one or both of the eyes may cause cataracts to develop at either the injury site or over the entire eye. Feline cataracts may also develop on the lenses of young kittens who have been exposed to toxins or drugs or who suffer from nutritional deficiencies.

Other causes of feline cataracts include central progressive retinal atrophy, lens displacement, microwave or radiation therapy exposure, electrocution and some rare metabolic diseases. Excess blood glucose in feline diabetes patients can cause eye damage that leads to the development of cataracts.
